Teachers, parents, youth program leaders, or virtually anyone who has ever had to keep an eye on the behavior of a group of children has coped with argumentative children who rely on physical aggression to solve their differences. Where children gather in numbers, some fussing and fighting seems inevitable. Unfortunately, there are children in every group who are especially quick to take offense and lash out, even if it seems unwarranted.
Although it may come as a surprise to some, the negative event that triggers a fight may be as inconsequential as a bump from behind in the lunch line. How can that be? Some children in any peer group may be prone to a style of thinking known as a "hostile attributional bias". Children with this bias in thinking have a tendency to presume that any negative outcome is the result of intentionally hostile behavior by their peers. Children who see hostility in peers, even when it does not exist, are especially likely to show aggression in the absence of any kind of provocation. Such children can be especially troublesome and disruptive at school, at home, and in the community.
The BrainPower Program is specifically designed to reduce physical aggression in elementary school children (grades 3-6) by reducing children’s inclination to see all peers as hostile.
